Description

This Creamy Swiss Chicken Casserole is a comforting, easy-to-make dish featuring tender chicken breasts baked in a creamy sauce topped with melted Swiss cheese and a crispy stuffing mix. Perfect for family dinners, it combines simple pantry ingredients to deliver a rich, cheesy casserole bursting with flavor.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken and Cheese

  • 3 large boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 6 slices Swiss cheese

Sauce

  • 1 (10.75 oz) can condensed cream of chicken soup
  • 1 cup milk
  • ½ onion, diced

Topping

  • 1 ½ cups stuffing mix (such as Stove Top)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prep: Preheat your oven to 350°F (177°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish thoroughly to prevent sticking.
  2. Layer Ingredients: Cut each chicken breast in half horizontally to create thinner cutlets. Arrange the chicken pieces in a single layer evenly across the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Lay the Swiss cheese slices evenly over the chicken.
  3. Make Sauce: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the condensed cream of chicken soup and milk until smooth and creamy. Stir in the diced onion to incorporate evenly.
  4. Pour and Top: Pour the creamy soup mixture over the chicken and Swiss cheese layers, ensuring they are well covered. Sprinkle the stuffing mix evenly over the top to create a crunchy topping.
  5. Bake: Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil. Place in the preheated oven and bake for 40 minutes. After 40 minutes, remove the foil and continue baking uncovered for an additional 20 minutes or until the stuffing topping is beautifully golden brown and the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C), ensuring it’s fully cooked.

Notes

  • Make sure to use boneless, skinless chicken breasts for even cooking and easier cutting.
  • Check the internal temperature of the chicken with a meat thermometer to ensure doneness and food safety.
  • You can substitute the stuffing mix with homemade breadcrumbs or crushed crackers for a different texture.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven to maintain crispiness.
  • For a lower sodium option, use low-sodium condensed soup and stuffing mix.
