For the churros:

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil for frying

For the coating:

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

For the chocolate sauce:

  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 4 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine water, sugar, salt, and butter, and bring to a boil.
  2. Reduce heat to low and stir in flour, mixing until a smooth dough forms. Remove from heat and cool for 5 minutes.
  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla until fully incorporated. Transfer dough to a piping bag with a star tip.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a pot to 375°F (190°C). Pipe dough strips into the oil and fry until golden brown.
  5. Drain on paper towels and coat churros in cinnamon sugar mixture.
  6. For the chocolate sauce, heat cream until steaming, then stir in chocolate, butter, and vanilla. Serve warm churros with sauce.
