Description

This French Onion Beef Casserole is a comforting and hearty dish that combines savory ground beef with the rich flavors of French onion soup, creamy sour cream, and melted cheeses. Layered with tender egg noodles and topped with crispy fried onions, it’s a perfect easy-to-make family dinner that delivers deep, satisfying flavor.

Ingredients

Scale

Beef Mixture

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 can (10.5 ounces) condensed French onion soup
  • 1 cup sour cream

Pasta and Cheese

  • 2 cups cooked egg noodles
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded Swiss cheese

Topping

  • 1/2 cup crispy fried onions

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare dish. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
  2. Sauté onions and garlic. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and cook for 3 to 4 minutes until softened. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
  3. Cook ground beef. Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks. Once cooked through, drain any excess fat from the pan.
  4. Season and combine. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, salt, and black pepper. Add the condensed French onion soup and sour cream, mixing well to combine all ingredients evenly.
  5. Add noodles and cheese. Fold in the cooked egg noodles and half of the mozzarella cheese into the beef mixture, ensuring an even distribution.
  6. Assemble casserole. Transfer the combined mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly. Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella cheese evenly over the top, followed by the shredded Swiss cheese.
  7. Bake the casserole. Place the dish in the oven and bake for 20 minutes, until the casserole is hot and bubbly.
  8. Add topping and finish baking. Remove from the oven and sprinkle the crispy fried onions over the top. Return the casserole to the oven and bake for an additional 5 minutes until the fried onions are golden brown and crisp.
  9. Serve. Remove from oven and allow to rest for a few minutes before serving hot.

Notes

  • For deeper flavor, caramelize sliced onions before adding them to the beef mixture instead of just sautéing.
  • This casserole can be assembled ahead and refrigerated for up to 24 hours before baking, making it a convenient make-ahead meal.
