Dough:
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F)
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
Filling:
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1–2 jalapeños, seeded and finely chopped
Boiling and Topping:
- 1/2 cup baking soda
- 4 cups water (for boiling)
- 1 egg yolk + 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)
- Coarse sea salt (for topping)
Instructions
- Prepare Dough: Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast in a bowl. Let sit until foamy. Add flour, salt, and melted butter. Knead until smooth. Let rise for 1 hour.
- Prepare Filling and Shape Pretzels: Mix cheese and jalapeños. Preheat oven. Divide dough, fill with cheese mixture, shape into pretzels.
- Boil and Bake: Boil pretzels in water and baking soda. Transfer to baking sheet. Brush with egg wash, sprinkle with salt. Bake until golden.
- Serve: Cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- Try pepper jack cheese for extra spice.
- Best enjoyed fresh but can be reheated in the oven for a few minutes.
