Ingredients
Scale
Egg Mixture
- 8 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk
Other Ingredients
- 6 slices day-old bread, torn into pieces
- 1 cup cooked bacon or sausage, chopped
- 1 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Optional: garlic powder, fresh herbs (such as parsley or chives)
Instructions
- Whisk Eggs and Milk: In a large bowl, whisk together the 8 large eggs and 2 cups of whole milk until the mixture is frothy and well combined.
- Add Bread and Seasonings: Stir in the torn pieces of the 6 slices of day-old bread along with salt, pepper, and any optional seasonings like garlic powder or fresh herbs, ensuring the bread is fully coated in the egg mixture.
- Incorporate Bacon and Cheese: Fold in the 1 cup of cooked, chopped bacon or sausage and 1 cup of grated sharp cheddar cheese, evenly distributing the savory and cheesy ingredients throughout the mixture.
- Refrigerate Overnight: Pour the entire mixture into a greased baking dish. Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight to allow the bread to soak up the custard.
- Bake the Casserole: The next morning, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the plastic wrap and bake the casserole uncovered for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the casserole is set in the center.
Notes
- Using day-old bread helps the casserole absorb the egg mixture better, resulting in a custardy texture.
- Feel free to swap bacon with sausage or even a combination of both for variety.
- Add vegetables like diced bell peppers or onions for extra flavor and nutrition.
- Let the casserole rest for 5-10 minutes after baking before serving to make slicing easier.
- Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat before serving.
