Smart Pantry Swaps & Ingredient Notes
The beauty of these bars is that they use simple, everyday ingredients you probably already have. The crust is just flour, sugar, and cold butter – nothing fancy, but the cold butter is key for that tender, crumbly texture. For the cookie layer, I use one egg, brown sugar, and melted butter to keep it soft and chewy, and semi-sweet chocolate chips give it just the right amount of richness.
If you want to switch things up, try using white chocolate chips or butterscotch chips instead of semi-sweet – both are delicious. For the caramel, a good store-bought jar works perfectly, but if you have a favorite homemade recipe, go for it. And don’t skip the sea salt on top – it’s a small touch that really makes the flavors pop. If you only have salted butter, just reduce the added salt.
🛒 Quick Substitution Cheat Sheet
- Room-Temperature Rule: Let cold dairy, eggs, or proteins sit out for 15 minutes before cooking for even heat transfer.
- Herb Swap: Use 1 teaspoon dried herbs for every 1 tablespoon of fresh chopped herbs called for.
- Seasoning Balance: Finish with a tiny squeeze of fresh lemon juice or flaky sea salt right before serving to brighten rich flavors.
