How to Store, Freeze & Reheat

These cupcakes are best enjoyed the same day, but they’ll keep in the fridge for up to 3 days—just let them sit at room temperature for 15 minutes before serving to soften the frosting. If you’re making them ahead for a bake sale, frost them in the morning and keep them chilled until you head out.

You can also freeze the unfrosted cupcakes for up to 2 months; just wrap them tightly in plastic and thaw overnight in the fridge. I love serving these with a dusting of cocoa powder or a few chocolate shavings on top—it makes them look extra special with zero effort.

Chocolate Coffee Cream Cupcakes

Moist chocolate cupcakes with a deep coffee kick, topped with a silky coffee cream frosting. The rich, slightly bitter coffee balances the sweet chocolate, making these a crowd-pleaser for any bake sale or potluck.

🍳 Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 12-cup muffin tin with paper liners.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, and salt. Add buttermilk, coffee, oil, egg, and 1 teaspoon vanilla; mix until smooth.
  3. Divide batter evenly among liners, filling each about 2/3 full. Bake for 20-22 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool completely on a wire rack.
  4. For frosting, in a chilled bowl, beat heavy cream, powdered sugar, instant coffee, and remaining vanilla until stiff peaks form.
  5. Pipe or spread frosting onto cooled cupcakes. Serve immediately or chill until ready to serve.

👩🍳 Chef Elena’s Kitchen Notes & Storage

For a stronger coffee flavor, use espresso instead of regular coffee. Store unfrosted cupcakes in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or freeze for up to 2 months; frost just before serving for best texture.
