How to Store, Freeze & Reheat

This piecaken is best served slightly warm, when the chocolate is still soft and the pecan layer is gooey. A scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce takes it over the top – trust me, it’s a crowd favorite. For a pretty presentation, dust with powdered sugar and add a few whole pecans on top.

For leftovers, store slices in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days – the flavors actually meld together even more overnight. To reheat, pop a slice in the microwave for 20 seconds or in a 300°F oven for 10 minutes. You can also freeze the whole piecaken (after it’s fully cooled) for up to 2 months; just wrap it well in plastic and foil. Thaw in the fridge overnight, then reheat gently before serving.

Thanksgiving Piecaken

A show-stopping Thanksgiving twist: a rich pumpkin pie baked right inside a chocolate cake, with a hidden layer of gooey pecan pie filling. It's a festive centerpiece that tastes as amazing as it looks – moist, spiced, and utterly indulgent.

🍳 Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Press the pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish and crimp the edges. In a bowl, whisk together pumpkin puree, sugar, eggs, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, salt, and condensed milk until smooth. Pour into the crust and bake for 45-50 minutes, until set but slightly jiggly in the center. Let cool completely.
  2. In a small bowl, mix pecans, corn syrup, brown sugar, melted butter, and vanilla. Spread this pecan mixture over the cooled pumpkin pie, then bake for an additional 15 minutes. Let cool completely, then freeze for 1 hour (or refrigerate for 3 hours) until firm.
  3. Prepare the chocolate cake batter according to the package directions. Grease a 10-inch bundt pan or a large oven-safe bowl. Pour half of the cake batter into the pan.
  4. Carefully place the chilled pie (with its crust) into the center of the batter, pressing down gently. Pour the remaining batter over and around the pie, covering it completely. If using, sprinkle chocolate chips on top.
  5. Bake for 50-60 minutes, until the cake is set and a toothpick inserted into the cake (not the pie) comes out clean. Cool in the pan for 20 minutes, then invert onto a serving plate. Slice and serve warm or at room temperature.

👩🍳 Chef Elena’s Kitchen Notes & Storage

Make sure your pie is fully chilled before nesting it in the cake batter – this keeps it from sinking and makes slicing cleaner. Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 4 days, or freeze the whole piecaken (wrapped tightly) for up to 2 months; thaw overnight in the fridge before serving.
