Smart Pantry Swaps & Ingredient Notes
The star here is instant lemon pudding – it’s the shortcut that gives you that silky, tangy custard without any stove time. I use whole milk for the creamiest texture, but you can swap in 2% or even oat milk if that’s what you have. Frozen whipped topping keeps it light, but fresh whipped cream works beautifully too.
For the blueberries, fresh is best when they’re in season, but frozen (thawed and drained) are a fine backup in winter. If you don’t have pound cake, angel food cake or even ladyfingers will do – just adjust the sweetness. And don’t skip the lemon zest and juice in the berry mixture; that little hit of acid wakes up the whole dessert.
🛒 Quick Substitution Cheat Sheet
- Room-Temperature Rule: Let cold dairy, eggs, or proteins sit out for 15 minutes before cooking for even heat transfer.
- Herb Swap: Use 1 teaspoon dried herbs for every 1 tablespoon of fresh chopped herbs called for.
- Seasoning Balance: Finish with a tiny squeeze of fresh lemon juice or flaky sea salt right before serving to brighten rich flavors.
