Smart Pantry Swaps & Ingredient Notes
The crust is a classic trio of graham crackers, butter, and sugar—nothing fancy, but it’s the sturdy base that holds everything together. You can use store-bought crumbs if you’re in a hurry, but I like to crush my own for a more rustic texture. For the filling, I rely on good-quality semi-sweet chocolate chips and heavy cream; together they create that smooth, ganache-like center that makes this pie feel extra special.
If you’re out of heavy cream, you can substitute whole milk mixed with a tablespoon of butter, but the texture won’t be quite as lush. And for the marshmallows, mini ones are easiest to scatter evenly, but you can also use large ones cut into quarters. If you’re feeling fancy, a sprinkle of sea salt on top before broiling adds a lovely contrast to the sweetness.
🛒 Quick Substitution Cheat Sheet
- Room-Temperature Rule: Let cold dairy, eggs, or proteins sit out for 15 minutes before cooking for even heat transfer.
- Herb Swap: Use 1 teaspoon dried herbs for every 1 tablespoon of fresh chopped herbs called for.
- Seasoning Balance: Finish with a tiny squeeze of fresh lemon juice or flaky sea salt right before serving to brighten rich flavors.
