Smart Pantry Swaps & Ingredient Notes
You probably have most of these ingredients already—ground beef, onions, garlic, and broth are pantry staples. The cremini mushrooms add that meaty texture, but you can swap in white button mushrooms or even portobellos if that’s what you’ve got.
Blue cheese is the star here, but gorgonzola or Roquefort work beautifully too. If you’re not a blue cheese fan, try feta or goat cheese for a milder tang. Heavy cream gives the sauce its silky body, though half-and-half will do in a pinch (just know it’ll be a bit thinner).
🛒 Quick Substitution Cheat Sheet
- Room-Temperature Rule: Let cold dairy, eggs, or proteins sit out for 15 minutes before cooking for even heat transfer.
- Herb Swap: Use 1 teaspoon dried herbs for every 1 tablespoon of fresh chopped herbs called for.
- Seasoning Balance: Finish with a tiny squeeze of fresh lemon juice or flaky sea salt right before serving to brighten rich flavors.
